Annikka sat down at a small table with her carefully balanced piece of almond cake, small parcels and cup of tea, hoping she wouldn't slop the scalding hot liquid onto her fingers.
Arrangement of parcels- which consisted of two books, a shirt and skirt, a hair-ribbon and a new comb, all wrapped in brown paper -and edibles accomplished, Annikka started on her tea, sipping it carefully in order not to blister her lips, and then decided to let it cool a bit.
The almond cake was delicious, but very crumby, and Annikka was gloomily sure that she had crumbs around her mouth. While she was trying to wipe them away without spreading them to the corners of her face, a stranger came in.

Adina glanced around the busy tea shop with interest. It wasn't her first choice as a spot for refreshments, but after having to travel back to her most recent customer's home to settle an issue regarding pay (a rather frustrating man at that), she felt that it was more important to get something to eat. As she glanced about, she scoffed inwardly, wondering who would be foolish enough to pay the fortune this shop seemed to be asking for such pitfully sized servings.
Looking about at the number of biddies around her, she muttered quitely to herself, "apparently everyone here."
As she was weaving her way behind a chair, a particularly round woman who was sitting nearby, pushed her chair out, knocking Adina into a well dressed woman nearby.

Annikka cried out as something thudded squarely into her back, sending her tea and cake flying, her packages skittering across the table and herself face-forward into the table, the chair falling and Annikka crashing to her knees. "Goddess!" she cried, and ascertained from the similar, but rather ruder cry from another person that someone else was involved in the spill and not just the chubby woman whom Annikka had had to edge past to get her table.

"Oh!" Adina exclaimed as she struggled to right herself. She looked down at the well dressed woman she had fallen into. "Are you all right? I'm really quite sorry, I didn't mean..."
She faltered, rather flustered at having drawn the attention of all the biddies in the teashop and very aware of the disapproving glares being sent her way. In the background, someone, probably the plump lady, was speaking in a rapid, angry language that was probably Scanran.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" Adina asked, sweeping her eyes over the mess she had created.

Annikka climbed unsteadily to her feet and looked at the other person involved. "Don't be silly- not your fault in the least. If people were more inclined to look what they were doing not only would I have less work to do, but I would be eating something right now." She glared at the fat woman, who was chattering away in shrill Scanran. "As for helping-" she shrugged helplessly- "well, as I said, it isn't your fault or mine. But I don't think the lady responsible understands Common, so I suppose..." she carefully gathered her parcels, which were thankfully mostly unscathed, righted her table and chair and straightened- "I just get another table and another piece of cake and cup of tea to replace the one that madam over there has just lost me." She glared at the plump woman again, and smiled at the other girl. "Did you come in here after something to eat, too?"

Adina looked up, surprised that the woman was not displeased with her. It was human nature to be upset at having been knocked into, and Adina couldn't understand why a woman, particularly such a well off looking one, would not be upset at such a disturbance. Goodness knows her own family would have been quite upset.
The woman's voice broke through Adina's thoughts.
"Did you come in here after something to eat, too?"
"Oh yes. Just to find something quick and inexpensive. I really never meant to cause what seems to be turning into an international crisis." She said, eyeing the angry Scanran woman.

Annikka's smile grew. "It's her fault anyway." She looked around for a spare table and spotted one near the door. "I'm going to get another cake and cup of tea. The almond cake here is really good, by the way. Worth the price, even though the portions aren't at all sizeable."

Adina couldn't help grinning at the woman's last comment. There was a practicality about her that Adina liked.
"I may join you in ordering that," she said with a smile as she moved out of the way of the plump Scanran woman. As she made her way she was aware of the dissaproving noises made by many of the women she passed.
"Are people always so dissapproving here?" she asked, the well-dressed woman.

Annikka grinned too. "It is very good."
"Are people always so dissapproving here?" the other woman asked sounding slightly perplexed.
Annikka shrugged. "I really don't know. I just came in here because it was nearby and I wanted something to eat." She ordered and paid for her slice of cake and second cup of tea, and carried them to the unoccupied time. "Which reminds me. I don't even know your name. I'm Annikka."

Adina was slightly surprised to hear this woman-Annikka she had said her name was-express opinions so similiar to her own in regards to the tea shop. Although when she spoke she sounded very down to earth, Adina had expected Annikka to be a typical well to do woman, kindly with very little time for things besides domestic affairs, rather like her own mother.
"It's very nice to meet you," she said politely. Thinking it best to follow suit and give her own first name she continued, "My name's Adina."
She proceeded up the small line for a while more, watching Annikka with interest, and she began to wonder what it was that this woman did. Annikka had a very buisness-like air about her as far as Adina was concerned.
Finally, giving in to curiosity, she asked, "Do you work or live nearby?"

"My name's Adina."
Annikka smiled. "Nice to meet you." She took a bite of her cake and supplemented it with some scalding hot tea.
"Do you work or live nearby?"
Annikka looked up and met Adina's eyes. She shook her head. "No. Quite a walk from here, actually. You?"

"No. Quite a walk from here, actually. You?"
Adina took a moment, fidgetting slightly. She could see what was next, "Oh what do you do?" to which she would have to either avoid or respond honestly. Somehow she doubted that the biddies who were quite obviously listening to every conversation going on would appreciate learning that they had a doxie from the Court of the Rogue in their midst.
"Oh, I come through here occassionally, though I live in the Lower City." Trying to turn the topic from herself, Adina taking a small bite of the cake said, "This is very good." before adding, "What is it that you do that brought you here if you're from quite a walk from here?"

"What is it that you do that brought you here if you're from quite a walk from here?"
Annikka choked on a bit of almond cake and swallowed with the aid of a large gulp of tea. She put the cup down, eyes watering. "Sorry. Never try to laugh and eat at the same time. No, I'm not working today. This is a sort of free day. I'm kind-of-not-really celebrating my birthday soberly before someone chips in to throw me a drunken party." She rolled her eyes. "Like last year, and the year before."

Adina was slightly surprised by this response. A tea shop wasn't her idea of an ideal birthday party-ing spot.
"Drunken birthday parties? You must have very rauocus friends," She commented "You sound like you don't enjoy these parties..." she added, slightly puzzled.
(OOC: Sorry for the shortness)

"Drunken birthday parties? You must have very rauocus friends. You sound like you don't enjoy these parties..."
Annikka looked at her. "I don't enjoy the headache the day afterwards, and in a job like mine raucous parties aren't to be welcomed."
She sipped her tea.
"And they're not particularly unusual, just other mages who are still practically students. Mentally, at least."
