Your Name: Aly
Character's Name: Hinna Berser
Age and Birthday: 18, July 27th
Race: All Tortallan. She can’t think of a person in her family who isn’t Tortallan, though there may be random splatters of other ethnicities in her bloodline far enough back
Social Standing: commoner
Profession: Dog, evening watch, Lower City
Place of Residence: Hinna lives with her mother and younger sisters in the Prettybone
Magic (if applicable): Hinna has a very small Gift. It’s light purple in colour, and she can do small magics, such as lighting candles or healing very small cuts. She sometimes gets envious of those with larger Gifts, such as her mother, but she tries to squash that envy, because she knows it isn’t that person’s fault that they are more powerful than she is.
Family: Hinna lives with her three younger sisters and her mother. Her father left after her mother never bore a son, and later became barren. Her youngest sister, Janica, is five and very sneaky. She loves to watch her older sister and then tell on them. Irene, who is eleven, is very quiet and withdrawn, even with her family, always listening rather than talking. Mic, fifteen, is very loud and bouncy. Hinna thinks she’s a bit too ditzy for her own good.
Physical Description: Hinna has short, reddish brown hair that falls right to her shoulders. It’s very thin, so it doesn’t get tangled easily and she can run without it getting in the way. Therefore, she very rarely pulls it upward. Her eyes are brownish-black and set far apart, with a narrow nose that sits crooked in her head. Her skin isn’t very tan, because she has the night watch, however, she isn’t pale. She has an olive tone in between the spectrum.
She is about five four, so she doesn’t have a height advantage in her field. However, her small size makes it easy to dart in and out of crowds. She has small hands with disproportionly long fingers, and arms with small, lean muscles. She is naturally slender, but it’s also hard for her to put on muscle for her job.
Personality: Although Hinna is a Dog, she isn’t an aggressive person. She is rather timid, especially with her partner, Birdie, who is angry and suffers from frequent mood swings. She is eager to please, and likes being in large groups so she can feel accepted. She isn’t quick to assume, rather giving people the benefit of the doubt. She smiles easily and laughs often. She tries to look on the bright side of things, and has a bubbly, bouncy nature. She isn’t ditzy or stupid; she’s just light-hearted. She doesn’t have much of a temper, because she thinks that the person who did it probably didn’t mean to annoy her. When she loses her temper, she feels bad about it right afterwards and apologizes at once.
However, when on the job, she is much different. She still gives criminals the benefit of the doubt, but she isn’t as timid. She won’t talk; she’s silent from concentration. She won’t think about anything except the person she’s tracking or the area she’s patrolling. She will let Birdie do most of the talking, though, because she gets flustered easily.
History: Hinna was born the oldest daughter to Ulli and Thom Berser. Her father desperately wanted a son, and as her mother kept producing females, he became more and more angry. Soon, Ulli suffered from the inevitable loss of the monthlies, and Thom left his family, leaving Ulli on her own.
Ulli could keep her daughters well fed and sheltered without Thom’s help, however. She was a hedgewitch, and they owned a shop, which they live above. Mic also has the Gift, so she has been trained as a hedgewitch. Hinna, however, doesn’t have as powerful a Gift, so she is stuck with what Irene does as well, fetching things and curing small ailments, not really doing anything. Hinna sometimes feels upset about this, but she tries not to; she knows it isn’t Mic’s fault that she has a more powerful Gift.
Hinna desperately wanted, at a young age, to stand out. She wanted very much to please, and she couldn’t do that at the shop. She has a blatant lack of Gift that is needed, so she had to find another way to get people to pay attention and praise her. She saw how the Dogs were sometimes hated, sometimes adored, but always being paid attention to. If a Dog came, you either ran or stayed, and Hinna wanted that type of attention, that type of reputation. She signed up to be a Puppy at once.
Once she was a puppy, she tried to get into a niche as soon as possible. She likes being around people, so she tried to be friendly to everyone. She earned friends, but it made her seem like a weak Puppy. She didn't try to fight the rumors, trying to let her skills that she was learning change them. Besides that, she had a very normal Puppy experience. Friends, hard work, and a bit of fun sprinkled in here and there.
Role Play Sample: It was a slow night. There wasn’t anything interesting happening, even in the Lower City tonight, besides the normal drunks being thrown out of one tavern and going to the next.
I’m goin’ to have to go home soon, Hinna thought. Janica is sick… and nothing is really happening tonight. Only a few more hours until her watch would be over, and then she’d go home, pull herself into bed, and sleep. Even though all she had drank that night was water, she was feeling a little light headed. I hope I’m not getting’ what Janica has…
