(OOC: Okay, I am posting now Cass. Uhm, I hope that day is right too. If not, just change it. I don't care.) Noah sat at his desk, filling out papers. He truly hated this part of his job. He would much rather be out in the streets, or visiting the kennels. He loved to watch his Dogs work and see the new Puppies. It had been four years since Noah had taken up this position and yet he was still overwhelmed by the amount of paperwork. Most of it was just signing documents, but if he had to sign the documents that meant he first had to read them. He put his sprawling signature on one paper and sighed. Before turning to work on the next thing, he got up and took a turn around his room. It was kept oddly sparse. Noah had what he liked to call 'the essentials'. All the books in here were referring to law or something not very interesting. The maps hung about the wall showed all of the districts of Corus and where the kennels were. Noah also had pins on trouble spots or other places of interest. The main object in the room was Noah's desk. It was made of dark oak and was very large. It took up nearly half of the office. There was a chair behind it, where Noah sat, and a chair in front where a guest could sit, if he or she chose to do so. Off to the side was a smaller table where Noah kept a pitcher of water. Seeing that, he strode over and poured himself a glass. He sighed as he felt the cool liquid slip down his throat. Now, maybe he could get some work done. But once again, as he sat behind his huge desk, Noah became restless. It wasn't usually like him, but he needed to do something. Go out and enjoy the lovely summer weather. Something. Noah needed a distraction.

(OOC: Hope I'm not discommoding anyone. ) Annikka sprinted down the corridor, breath coming short and hands none too clean, and skidded to a halt outside an office, opening the door unceremoniously and shutting it very quickly when the office's occupant turned out to be a clerk, face burning. She calmed herself a little and opened the correct door in a slightly more civilised manner, hoping the man who was reknowned for a dislike of healers wouldn't hate her on sight. "Sir? One of the Dogs is downstairs in the Healer's Wing. She might be bleeding to death and says she has to talk to you. Right now."

Noah looked up as a slightly disheveled woman threw herself into his office. Normally, he would have sent her away in annoyance, but he needed something to do and maybe she would tell him something interesting. He looked closer at the young woman and noticed that she was a healer. Not an ordinary one either, the Head Healer. For the moment Noah decided to put aside his dislike of mages to listen to her.
"Sir? One of the Dogs is downstairs in the Healer's Wing. She might be bleeding to death and says she has to talk to you. Right now."
Noah furrowed his brow slightly. Who? was his first thought. He stood and moved from his position behind his desk. He didn't even bother to voice the question when that would be a waste of breath. "She might be bleeding to death? Shouldn't you know a thing like that?" It was a rhetorical question, but he asked it nonetheless. "Let's move, then. I'll see to her."
(OOC: And I guess you can move it or whatever...)

Annikka's lips tightened at the comment. "Sir, I don't know. There's a very fine line between badly wounded and bleeding to death. I'm only bringing the message because my deputies are taking holidays and everyone else on duty is too frightened of you to come and say and sir you're going in the wrong direction!"
She stood still, taking quick breaths to make up for those she'd skipped charging along the crowded corridors and warren-like passages that made up the Palace while the man hurried back towards her. "This way," she said, indicating the direction.

"Fine line indeed," Noah mumbled, hurrying out of the office. He quickly turned and started to walk briskly down the hallway. He didn't even realize that he was going the wrong way until he heard the healer call to him. "Right," he said, turning around. Not like I go there often, he thought to himself irritably.
"When did she come in?" he asked the woman who was panting slightly.

(OOC: Sorry for dropping off the face of the earth!)
Annikka did a fairly good job of suppressing a very slight smirk as her ears caught the 'fine line' comment.
"When did she come in?"
Automatically, Annikka looked around for one of the time-candles that kept time all over the Healer's Wing. Not finding one, she resorted to a guess. "Five minutes, maybe? But gods only know how long it took her to get through the gate guards. She was practically dropping on her feet when she found a healer, or so I'm told. We had best be quick."

(OOC: Eeek, now it's my turn to say that!)
"Five minutes, maybe? But gods only know how long it took her to get through the gate guards. She was practically dropping on her feet when she found a healer, or so I'm told. We had best be quick," was the reply to his asked question. Noah noticed that she looked around for something that marked the time.
"We don't keep them here. I find that they can be distracting for those who want to leave. Strangely, it would seem some people would to prefer to be somewhere else than in my office." Noah's voice was tinted slightly with sarcasm, but not enough so that it didn't sound normal. He thought this healer was sharp enough to catch it, but maybe not. All the time he was speaking, they were still walking quickly to the Healer's Wing.
Noah looked at the healer, placing her in his memory. "You are the Head Healer, are you not?" he asked.

(OOC: Sorry for stealing your line.)
"We don't keep them here. I find that they can be distracting for those who want to leave. Strangely, it would seem some people would to prefer to be somewhere else than in my office."
Annikka noted the sarcasm and was tempted to retaliation. "You surprise me- left here, sir, not a right." She indicated the correct corridor.
"You are the Head Healer, are you not?"
"Yes," Annikka said simply and pushed a door open. "Here we are. The Healer's Wing, sir."

(OOC: Stealing what line? I meant that it was my turn to say sorry for leaving... Oh, and after this, shall we move it?)
"You surprise me- left here, sir, not a right." Noah raised an eyebrow, but did not ask anything. It was better that she just think what she wish. And he didn't particularly care what that was.
Noting the woman's suggestion, Noah turned left. He entered into the Healer's Wing and looked for his Dog among the people.

(OOC: Never mind. How do I move this?)
Annikka groaned inwardly at the press of people crowding the place and turned to Noah. "I asked them to put her in a small ward- quieter."
She called to one of the duty healers. "Marian! Where's the Dog?" Annikka listened impatiently to the woman's directions, nodded her thanks, and pushed a path through the people. "This way."

"This way," the healer told him as she set off toward his Dog. When he approached, he was that it was Dayna. She was one of his senior dogs and had been in this position before. Never before had he seen her looking in as bad of shape as this.
"Dayna," Noah whispered, leaning toward her. "What happened? Where's Tullen?" He named her partner.
Uncharacteristically, her eyes filled with tears. "He's gone. They took us by surprise."
"Who?" the Provost asked urgently. He watched as the woman tried to say something, but before she could, she faded into unconsciousness. Noah shook his head sadly and blinked the tears that were forming away. "Will she be okay, Healer haMinch?" He addressed the head healer by her name for the first time. He knew that there was a possibility that Dayna wouldn't be, but he wanted to know her chances.
(OOC: Is that the proper way to address Annikka?)

(OOC: I guess. Dunno.)
"Will she be okay, Healer haMinch?"
Annikka shouted for more healers to come, now, and knelt to check vital signs. She held the woman Dayna's wrist, counting time. "Pulse weak, but steady." She fumbled in her pockets for a mirror and whispered an obscenity under her breath. "Where is it, where is it- found it!"
She pulled out the mirror and held it against the Dog's mouth. Quickly, she looked at it. Mist clouded the surface.
Annikka stood up and stepped back as three healers converged on the bed. She put the mirror back in her pocket and answered the question without looking at the man: "Forty to sixty of a hundred she lives, I reckon, so long as she doesn't break the scabs and the bleeding on the cuts doesn't start again. She's tough. I can think of three people who would be dead by now with those wounds."

Noah watched, his eyes crude, as healers flocked to the scene as the Head Healer called them. He did not show it, but he was worried. Dayna was one of his most valued Dogs and he knew her well. He did not want to be the one to tell her family she had passed on. Then he thought of Tullen. Another fine Dog. Noah definitely did not want to tell the man's wife. Not that he liked doing things anyway. Unfortunately, sometimes these things had to be done.
Noah's attention was once again taken by the healer as she pulled out a mirror to check for breath. When she found some, Noah released a quick breath.
"Forty to sixty of a hundred she lives, I reckon, so long as she doesn't break the scabs and the bleeding on the cuts doesn't start again. She's tough. I can think of three people who would be dead by now with those wounds," the healer told him in response to his earlier asked question. These weren't great chances, but Dayna had overcome the odds before.
"Yes," Noah agreed, nodding. "She's done it before. I've no doubt she can pull through again. I trust she will be in the best care and I will be informed of anything that happens." It was phrased like a request, but it was said like a command. He didn't mean to sound that way, but Noah didn't want to be in the company of these mages longer than he had to.

"Yes," Noah agreed, nodding. "She's done it before. I've no doubt she can pull through again. I trust she will be in the best care and I will be informed of anything that happens."
"Of course," she said absently, mind on other matters, and then the sentence she'd just agreed with presented itself to a bit of her brain that wasn't concentrating on bandage supplies. Annikka's jaw dropped. "Excuse me, sir, but I could have sworn you just implied that we wouldn't give her the best care we could. You really don't like mages, do you? It shows."
She looked at the patient and moved a little way away, in order not to disturb the healers or the patient. "I will try and find someone who doesn't mind having their nose bitten off in the process of carrying messages. Problem is, we're quite a prideful bunch and we do our best, so when it's suggested that we wouldn't..." She trailed off, and checked a time-candle. "Rank may mean a lot to some of the healers who work here, but we can all comprehend the Queenscove System for treating patients, that is, worst injured first rank regardless, and no cutting corners. I appreciate," she added, "that you didn't want a rant, but we would have kept you informed anyway. It's one of our responsibilities. There was no need to order it to be done."

"Of course," the healer absently replied to him. Noah was nodding as she realized what he had truly said.
"Excuse me, sir, but I could have sworn you just implied that we wouldn't give her the best care we could. You really don't like mages, do you? It shows."
"No," Noah said shrewdly. "I do not." He followed her as she moved to a slightly quieter area. Away from any patients.
"I will try and find someone who doesn't mind having their nose bitten off in the process of carrying messages. Problem is, we're quite a prideful bunch and we do our best, so when it's suggested that we wouldn't..."
Noah thought what she said over, quickly. This mage was different than others. She said what she thought. He liked that quality in people. It didn't mean he liked her, but she wasn't as bad as some mages. "I never said you wouldn't do your best. I was simply expressing my ... " He trailed off. Noah didn't really want to say that he was worried, but he was. Normally, he wouldn't have been so blunt. Well, maybe he would have.
I appreciate," she added after mentioning something about the Queenscove System of whatever, "that you didn't want a rant, but we would have kept you informed anyway. It's one of our responsibilities. There was no need to order it to be done."
"Good," Noah said softly. He was trying not to be ruder than he already had. "Uh, that is, I mean ... thank you."
