Annikka left her office and walked briskly out of the Healer’s Wing, marching down a series of corridors. Any healers who might have thought to stop her with queries, or mages who wanted to know what the hell a mere chit of a healer thought she was doing forcing a full Council meeting over Marcel’s research into new war-techniques, were easily dissuaded by the fact that it was obvious that Annikka haMinch, Head Healer, was on a mission.
A very important mission. She had got up at the usual early time, but had also had an unusually late night through dealing with a minor Lord’s daughter, who had been very feverish indeed. Of course, no-one would do for them but the Head Healer, Annikka thought crossly. She had taken a serious dislike against both the lord and his flapping wife, who had both been horrible snobs. They had also owned a young, frightened-looking slave, probably of Scanran origin, who the lady was taking out her anxiety on, and it had made Annikka’s fingers itch to slap her. That wasn’t the problem, though; in a hurry to check on her patient, she had not eaten breakfast that morning, and she was not so much hungry as ravenous.
She hoped the cooks wouldn’t mind her turning up now, some hours after breakfast had been served but well before lunch. She had known them to be very unsympathetic when faced with a hungry mage in desperate need of sustenance, but thought that her title might swing it in her favour. Although she disliked the idea, Annikka couldn’t help but admit it came in very useful at times.
She trotted down a corridor, sidestepped a servant with a full tray, passed through the dining hall and came to the kitchens: a small empire more grand, stressful and hierarchical than even the University. Annikka looked around, wondering who to approach first.
